This is not a post about smoking in Richmond, or about plans to torch the city for the third time in as many centuries. No, InLight Richmond is a a light-inspired community art event planned in conjunction with the 1708 Gallery's 30th anniversary.
Modeled after Paris' Nuit Blanche (Literally, "white night." Montreal and other chic cities have their own versions.), InLight Richmond happens this September as part of First Friday. Unlike those other cities -- where the event is a dusk-til-dawn maelstrom of art, food and street chaos -- Richmond's first InLight event will consist of a series of light-themed art installations and performances along Broad Street, including rooftops.
From 7pm, Friday September 5, 2008 to 2am, Saturday, September 6, the 300, 200 and 100 blocks of W. Broad Street in Richmond, VA will serve as sites for art works. Various locations within these blocks have been identified as primary and secondary sites: for instance walls, parking lots, storefronts, doorways, median strips. For details and images of sites, please click here. Artists are also welcome to explore roving performances/installations (i.e. the street as canvas). Select sites will showcase installations that remain on view throughout the evening as well as works that can remain on view through November 3 and possibly longer). Others sites will target performances and installations that will rotate over the course of the night.
InLight Richmond has its own weblog, which includes images of the various sections of Broad Street they plan to illuminate -- and details on how to submit your proposal to light up a section of downtown Richmond.
And while current plans don't call for Broad Street to pull an all-nighter, the fun will apparently shift to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts at 2 am for continued events and a breakfast. Here are some images from a few of the other Nuit Blanche events from around the world.
