Recess in the Recession: More Balls, Less Air
One week ago today, I discovered that I was gainfully unemployed. Today was the first day in a week where I literally felt like someone was trimming moments off of the day; I was at least five minutes behind schedule every step of the way.
The day officially started with an early morning chat with Tracey at Anthem, who gave us a rundown on some insurance options. (Nikole and "Little Thea" listened in on the speaker phone.) We're leaning toward a high deductible health plan, but away from the super-high deductible plans and Health Savings Accounts. Oddly enough, when we add in some additional coverage for Thea, dental coverage and life insurance, we're not paying much more than we paid for coverage through my former employer -- and significantly less than if we took advantage of COBRA.
I had a lunch meeting with partners in a small design/brand firm who wanted to bounce around some ideas on whether there was the potential of a convergence between their long-term strategy and where my career trajectory was pointed. This would be part one of a longer conversation, if we choose to continue talking.
I raced home from lunch so I could join Nikole and Thea for a visit to the world's best pediatrician, Dr. Gayle Smith. Thea's on day three of sweet potatoes with no visible side effects, and Dr. Smith -- as always -- was all about cheering us on. Thea is almost 17 pounds and 28 inches long, which is a long journey from her NICU status seven short months ago.
This evening, I joined a minor Who's Who in the Richmond community for dinner in honor of former Charlotte mayor Richard Vinroot, who is speaking tomorrow at Hope in the Cities' annual Metropolitan Richmond Day breakfast. Following the breakfast, I'll be participating in a two-hour panel discussion with Robert Grey (former mayoral candidate; local lawyer; former chairman of Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; former president of the American Bar Association) and John Moeser (professor emeritus at VCU, and senior fellow at UR's Bonner Center for Civic Engagement).
Tomorrow, after the Hope in the Cities event, I'll be watching The and raking leaves while Nikole works on jewelry. Friday: all meetings, all day.
yay for the health insurance progress!!
thea is bigger than my amanda, who is 10 months old! ... Clearly you are doing something right!
