Thirty-six hours after I got home from my last day (or literally my last 25 minutes) of work, and we haven't starved. We also haven't skinned and roasted either of the cats or the dog (though we did discuss which of the three would make a better meal, and coat-and-glove combo for Thea).
After a good morning of networking and negotiating writing possibilities, I took my recently deceased MacBook to Capital Mac for whatever passes for CPR in the computer industry. For kicks, I also took my old iBook, whose hard drive died earlier in 2007.
The verdict? For all intents and purposes, the period of September 2007 through yesterday afternoon did not happen. All of my writing, photos and music from that period -- gone.
They did manage to salvage data from the older Mac, which means that the period of February 2003 through August 2007 has miraculously returned. All of my writing, photos and music from that period -- restored. It's like the Stuart Dynasty.
I spent the rest of the day trying to respond to the deluge of emails that have flooded my mailbox since mid-morning yesterday. We also took Thea out for a spin -- to a children's clothing consignment shop in Short Pump; to Costco; to Ukrop's.
Tomorrow morning, there's a meeting of the Virginia Leadership Association at the University of Richmond that I'll be attending. Then drinks with friends.
Monday, I visit the resource center set up for folks who were let go yesterday. I'll learn everything I need to know about COBRA and unemployment benefits.
Somehow, I don't think this is the last we'll be hearing from John Sarvay. Layoffs and melting Macs don't usually hold back multitalented man possessed. Keep the faith.
