The Baby Factory: A Lesson in Waking

Today's lesson learned: Wake the sleeping mother five minutes before waking the sleeping baby. The reverse approach makes both of them cranky -- one screams for food, while the other rushes to get the production line cranked up.

Fortunately, Thea's only got a week or two before her nursing habits are well-established...then Nikole can teach her to nurse lying down. That's where breastfeeding really comes in handy, because she can sleep while Thea eats! I used to use my topside arm to sort of make a kickstand over the baby, so I never had to worry about my husband or I squishing him. The only thing to be careful about is keeping the baby to the middle of the bed. It's also a good idea to throw a couple of prefolds down in case of slobber or yurp.
