Folks in the Near West End neighborhoods surrounding the Libbie and Grove commercial district should be pleased with the news that Joe's Market, a concept store introduced years back by Ukrop's, will survive the grocer's recent acquisition. The Times-Dispatch reports that the store has been acquired by two Ukrop's employees, and there will be beer.
Partners David Taylor, the grocery chain's director of merchandising, and Buster Wright, its senior director of packaged goods, saw buying Joe's Market as a good opportunity.
"When we saw that Joe's Market hadn't been sold, we were interested in keeping it," according to Taylor.
If the lease agreement with the property's landlord is worked out, they take control on Feb. 8.
That's when the store's name will change from Joe's Market to Libbie Market. It eventually will open on Sundays, and the partners are beginning the process to obtain a license to sell beer and wine. Since Joe's Market is owned by Ukrop's, it is not open on Sundays, nor does it sell alcoholic beverages.
I wonder if they thought about calling it "Dave and Buster's"?
