What happens if 1,000 people engage in more than 40 community projects supporting Richmond's nonprofit community, schools and parks -- and the region's major newspaper and TV stations don't show up? Does anyone hear about it?
A quick scan of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and all three television news sites shows zero coverage of yesterday's Hands On Richmond event, the second annual day of service that connects hundreds of area volunteers with community projects.
Maybe the HandsOn Richmond folks dropped the ball and did a horrible job with their PR and media relations efforts, or maybe the local news media didn't see the day-long event as being particularly newsworthy.
Whatever the reason, the lack of news coverage is disappointing. And perhaps an indication of how we're all going to get news in the future -- from each other.
Fortunately, Twitter and Flickr and RVANews and Church Hill People's News and Buttermilk & Molasses all gave the masses vehicles to share their stories and spread their images.
